Platform Cooperativism Resource Library

Summary

Txiki Blasi, Oriol Alfambra Serrano, and Nuria Soto (Mensakas) at Who Owns the World Conference, convened by the Platform Cooperativism Consortium at The New School in November 2019. They are speakers for the Owning Our Power: Young Lions of the Co-op Movement event.

About the event: We are proud to showcase a combination of some of the most inspiring projects that have recently launched, and others that have distinctly proven themselves over the past few years. We will hear about strategies for capitalization, franchisement of the co-op model, the encouragement and facilitation of democratic governance among distributed producers, collaboration with unions, technological innovations relying on blockchain, and revenue sharing in the community. In quick succession, presenters will offer you an overview of how they are collectively making cooperative interventions across a range of sectors. Learn from these pioneers.

Txiki Blasi is a member of the Riders X Derechos union that was born in 2017 from the fight for labor rights against Glovo and Deliveroo in Barcelona. From that fight, Mensakas was born, a cooperative project that I have been a part of since December 2018 as a member and worker.  I currently perform the function of governance of the cooperative and at the same time cover delivery tasks.  I love working in friendly environments and I consider myself a privileged dreamer to be part of this project with my colleagues.

Oriol Alfambra Serrano and Nuria Soto are the founders of Mensakas. In May 2017 Barcelona couriers from companies such as Deliveroo, Glovo or UberEats created the RidersXDerechos (Riders4Rights) union campaign to defend our rights. We have demonstrated and gone on strike against the situation of falsely self-employed workers. As a consequence, we have suffered dismissals, which we have already reported to the courts. Mensakas is an app for online ordering and home delivery. In April 2018 we created the Mensakas SCCL cooperative company. It is self-managed by its own workers. Everyone has an employment contract, not false freelance contract, and therefore taxes and social security contributions are being paid.
