Summary

Simon Pek at Who Owns the World Conference, convened by the Platform Cooperativism Consortium at The New School in November 2019. Pek is a speaker for Town Hall 5 – Distributed Governance.

About This Town Hall: Meet a group of entrepreneurial platform co-op founders presenting on enterprises that range in maturity, from emerging to well-established. They hail from as far as Turkey, Belgium, Finland, Spain, and Indonesia. The focus of the discussion is the governance of geographically dispersed independent contractors. Aggregating members and workers on a platform comes with unique opportunities for increasing participation and potentially also for distributed decision making.

Simon Pek works as an Assistant Professor of Sustainability and Organization Theory at the Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria. He teaches and researches in the area of sustainability and organization theory. His primary research explores how organizations and the individuals within them embed social and environmental sustainability into their cultures, strategies, and daily operations. He is particularly interested in novel forms of democratizing organizations and platforms by drawing on concepts including deliberative democracy and sortition. He is very excited to attend this conference, and is particularly excited to connect with any practitioners and academics working in this space and interested in collaborating.
