Crusading Doctor : My Fight for Cooperative Medicine
Summary
Edge wear to the boards and jacket and some foxing to the endpapers. Nice copy otherwise with no writing or marks. Scarce First Edition (1956). 312 pages. A remarkable story about a Lebanese-born doctor who started his practice in Oklahoma and in 1929 attempted to establish a cooperative system for medical care instead of the standard fee-for-service system that prevailed. He details his fight for such a system and the strong, threatening opposition he received from the medical community, including the American Medical Association (AMA). Dr. Michael Shadid (1882-1966) founded the first cooperatively owned and operated hospital in the United States and became the first president of the Cooperative Health Federation of America.
